5 Tips for Residential Electric Gate Installation

Thinking about getting an electric gate installed? There tend to be two reasons why people have automatic gates fitted. First, they want to enhance the security of their home, or that of a relative. Or second, they want to increase the value of the property. The good news is that electric gates do both. There are, however, a few things to think about in advance of electric gate installations.

1. What’s the Primary Purpose of Your Electric Gate?

Knowing the key function of your automatic gate will play a part in decisions about design and positioning. If, for example, you want a security gate installed, we would advise that you choose a location and design that obscures any view of your property. Alternatively, if your gate is required as an access point for visitors, a more welcoming design with a door entry system would be appropriate.

2. Swing or Sliding Electric Gate?

The 1st Choice team know from experience that no two electric gate installations are the same. Every driveway has slightly different dimensions, which require a tailored design to fit exactly. If you would like a swing gate, your drive will need to be deep in order to accommodate the gate’s arc. If your drive is shallow, or built on an incline, we can install sliding gates. For narrow, or small driveways 1st Choice installs folding gates, or telescopic sliding gates.

3. Wood, Metal or Iron?

Bespoke electric gate installation are designed to our customers’ preferences. Often we’re asked to match the gates to the exterior styling of the property. Or, there may be a feature that we’re asked to include, such as a house name, number or even a coat of arms! Wrought iron gates offer the potential for beautiful period designs, and all our electric gates can be finished in the colour of your choice.

4. Additional Security Features?

For many of our customers, electric gates are a welcome first line of defence against unwelcome visitors. 1st Choice would recommend an audio or video door entry system to fulfil this function. This allows unknown visitors to be assessed before they get the front door. Residential CCTV is also popular as it is a proven deterrent against opportunistic crime, and offers remote access to images of your property’s exterior.

5. Electric Gate Maintenance

An electric gate installation sits outside your property, summer and winter. As such, it’s subject to baking heat, ice, pouring rain and snow. 1st Choice installations are robust, but they – like all external systems – need regular maintenance. We offer a tailored maintenance package, based on the volume of usage, and the positioning of the gate. And, if your gates break down for any reason, we’ll repair them for your promptly, day or night.
