Answering 5 Questions About Automatic Driveway Gates

Many of our clients tell us that it’s a great feeling to see their automatic driveway gates opening in ‘welcome’ after a long day at work. That’s not the only important function electric gates can fulfil, though. The range of wrought iron, timber and steel designs can enhance the look of your home exterior, and increase its value. Most important, they add an extra layer of security for your family.

Automatic driveway gates are a popular addition to homes and business because of the range of functions they fulfil. In this blog, we thought we’d answer 5 questions we get asked regularly by clients about their installation:

1. Do I Need a Long Driveway to Install Electric Gates?

Not at all – although they’re tremendously popular with people who have long driveways! All you need is a space off the road, in front of your house. For swing gates you require enough depth for the arc of the gate. If this isn’t available we can install sliding gates instead. 1st Choice Security Systems also fit bi-fold gates. Whatever the size or shape of your driveway, we’ll design a solution.

2. If a Delivery or Friend Comes to the Gate, What Happens?

1st Choice has a simple solution to this. We’ll fit a gate entry system to allow easy access for goods or visitors. Pressing a button will alert the householder who can then check out who’s buzzing via audio or video. If they’re happy to grant access, this happens via an internal button which opens the gate. This system is particularly useful for older people who are on their own in the house.

3. What if There’s a Power Cut?

All 1st Choice gates are fitted with a manual override system. So, if you find you’re without power for any reason, you’ll be able to open and close the gate manually without a problem. We recommend that all automatic driveway gates are maintained regularly, and our maintenance packages include emergency repair services. So you’ll never find yourself coping with a problem alone.

4. Can I Automate My Existing Driveway Gates?

In the majority of cases this is possible, and it’s a cost-effective way to upgrade your existing driveway gates. 1st Choice engineers will carry out an audit of your existing gates before committing to the work. In some cases the original design won’t be able to withstand the additional strain, and if this is the case, we’ll let you know, and help you to find a solution.

5. How do Automated Driveway Gates Increase My Security?

A recent study carried out into home security asked ex-burglars what the most effective deterrents were. Alongside barking dogs, and CCTV cameras, automatic driveway gates were considered major factors. The study concluded that electric gates won’t stop a planned burglary, but opportunistic criminals would consider them a sign that the property was professionally protected.
