It would if it was poorly designed. At 1st Choice we prevent this by installing inverted V-profile tracks or self-clearing channels fitted with localised drainage outlets. Additionally, we mount heavy-duty sweeping brushes directly onto the leading edge of the gate panels to physically push leaves, silt, and gravel out of the rail before the wheels pass over it.
Is there a specific angle or percentage of slope where a gate becomes impossible to install?
There’s no single magic number, but gradients steeper than 1:10 (a 10% incline) generally rule out tracked bi-folds because of the sheer force required to push the gate uphill. For steep hills, a cantilever sliding gate is the only viable choice because it travels perfectly level across the face of the incline, completely independent of the steep road surface beneath it.
Does opening a gate uphill mean the motor will run incredibly slowly?
It won’t if you use an inverter-driven automation control board. Standard fixed-speed motors struggle against gravity, causing them to strain on the way up and accelerate dangerously on the way down. We use smart, variable-speed inverter panels that dynamically adjust the electrical frequency.
Can’t we just save the money on tracks or cantilevers and make a standard bi-fold swing outward toward the road instead?
That would place you on the wrong side of the law. Under the Highways Act 1980, it’s an offence for any gate to open outward onto a public highway, pavement, or right of way. Even if your property sits well back from the main road, an outward-swinging gate can trap visitors’ cars on the verge or create a hazard for delivery drivers. Your gate must stay entirely within your private boundary lines.
