If you have a short driveway, or your home is close to the road, you may not have the depth required for traditional swing gates. We’re able to offer a whole range of alternatives, however, in a range of materials and styles. Over the past decade we’ve designed a variety of innovative and secure gates for small driveways across Bedfordshire, the Home Counties and North London.
4 Types of Gates for Small Driveways
1st Choice designers love the opportunity to work with challenging driveways. Having to overcome obstacles allows them to get creative with the options they offer to clients. We haven’t been beaten yet, and some of our best work has been for non-standard driveways.
Here are the 4 basic design concepts that we work with for shallow driveways.
1. Sliding Gates
Sliding gates offer a great solution for shallow driveways. First, cars are able to drive right up to them as there’s no need to leave space for the ‘swing’. Second, slide gates have a self-locking feature which means you can leave them open or closed, whichever you wish. The gates run on a track which runs across the gateway and extend to allow the gates to slide to the side.
If the entrance to your property lacks space to accommodate the full-length trackway on one side, we have a solution. To reduce the space the gate has to move into, we can install two gates, each fitted with their own motor. The trackway on each side is, therefore, half the length of a trackway for just one gate.
2. Bi-Fold Swing Gates
Where space is limited on either side of the driveway opening, a version of the swing gate installation is still possible. Bi-folds look like traditional swing gates, but they’re hinged in the centre. As the gates open, the outside panel folds into the inside panel. The depth of the swing in halved, whilst creating a full sized opening for vehicles to pass through.
3. Gates Sliding Round Corners
Where your driveway is bounded by perimeter walls or panels, curved tracks allow sliding gates to glide round corners. This solution requires a design made up of vertical panels that are hinged on each side to be able to accommodate the curve. This elegant configuration is particularly effective when used in conjunction with wrought iron gate design.
4. Telescopic Design
If you have a driveway with limited lateral reach on just one side of your driveway entrance, the telescopic gate offers a clever design solution. Two gates slide, on separate tracks into one opening. The roadside gate travels the full width of the driveway, when closing, whilst the inner gate extends just halfway across.
